The Cheetahs were formed in 2006. The current franchise represents the South African Rugby Regions of Free State & Northern Cape. 

In 2017 they play 8 home games against the Lions, Bulls, Sunwolves, Sharks, Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders & Stormers. They will play 7 away games against the Jaguares, Stormers, Bulls, Blues, Hurricanes, Sunwolves & kings.

Their head coach is Franco Smith. The assistant coaches are Corniel van Zyl, Charl Strydom & Daan Human.
