The Highlanders were formed in 1996. They represent the New Zealand Rugby Provincial Unions of Otago, Nth Otago & Southland.

In 2017 they play 8 home games against the Chiefs, Crusaders, Rebels, Blues, Sunwolves, Stormers, Waratahs & Reds. They will play 7 away games against the Blues, Hurricanes, Brumbies, Cheetahs, Bulls, Western Force & Crusaders.

The head coach is Tony Brown. He is assisted by Scott McLeod, Mark Hammett, Clarke Dermody & Jon Preston.
