The Highlanders were formed in 1996. They represent the New Zealand Rugby Provincial Unions of Otago, Nth Otago & Southland.

The 2019 head coach is Aaron Mauger. He is assisted by Mark Hammett, Glenn Delaney & Clarke Dermody.
