The Crusaders were formed in 1996. They represent the New Zealand Rugby Provincial Unions of Buller, Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury, Sth Canterbury, Tasman & West Coast.

In 2017 they play 7 home games against the Brumbies, Blues, Western Force, SunWolves, Stormers, Hurricanes & Highlanders. They play 8 away games against the Highlanders, Reds, Waratahs, Cheetahs, Bulls, Chiefs, Rebels & Hurricanes.

The head coach is Scott Robertson. He is assisted by Brad Mooar, Leon MacDonald, Jason Ryan & Simon Thomas.
